Organist, Teacher and Lecturer in Music, Examiner and Accompanist
Colin Wright has built a well-founded reputation in the East Riding of Yorkshire, his home for over 30 years, as a fine practising musician. For many years he has been involved in a wide variety of musical activities as organ recitalist, piano or organ accompanist, with frequently appearances in concert, as well as conductor and organist at innumerable church services across the area alongside his work as lecturer / teacher and examiner in music.
Colin Wright was Assistant Organist at Beverley Minster from 1996 to 2010 and in 2009 retired from his post as a part-time member of the music staff at Hull University where he had lectured since 1997 although he continues to teach alongside his current PhD research in Aural Skills which is scheduled to be completed in 2013.
He has since 1999 been a member of the Music Examiner Panel of Trinity College, London, having examined candidates in music up to diploma level in England and several other countries including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Colin has recorded two CDs of organ music at Beverley Minster, the second of which is available from Priory Records. His compositions, though at present unpublished, comprise a small number of short works mostly for choir and organ.
Originally from West Middlesex, Colin won an organ scholarship to St Catharine's College, Cambridge, in 1964. There he studied organ and choral practice under Dr Peter Le Huray, later gaining the award of Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists. Colin has lived in the East Riding since 1974 and has been involved in a wide variety of musical activities with frequent appearances in concert as organ recitalist and piano or organ accompanist, as well as conductor, and as organist at innumerable church services across the area alongside his work as a lecturer/teacher and examiner in music.
He has been accompanist to the East Riding County Choir since 1991 for which he is also Deputy Conductor and was accompanist for thirteen years until 2010 to the Hull Choral Union. He has participated regularly in concerts for both societies in Hull and the surrounding area. He is also frequently engaged in performance with a number of other local organisations, including the Melsa Consort, the Hull Bach Choir and Invitatione.
